Chicago Diary: Out Back in Back of the Yards - Chicago - 7D II - 26 Jan 2016 - 044

East Alley, 5100 block of South Morgan.

One of several abandoned homes in the 5100 block of South Morgan. All of them apparently untouched by Amanda Williams and her "color(ed) houses" project. They could have saved quite a bit of time and money, since they only would have had to paint the boards on the windows and doors.

Frankly, I like these colored homes. The last thing I want to see is one of those boring, lilly-white frame homes. Back in the day when Upton Sinclair was snooping around the Back of the Yards, were all these homes painted white? Is it blue today because this neighborhood is no longer ethnic White, and has now become what Amanda Williams calls a "racially charged city space?"

Frankly, that's all a bunch of bullshit. The only thing that really matters is that this home is sitting empty, when someone should be fixing it up so they can move back in.

I imagine this home has seen good times as well as bad. People have raised families here for generations. Whatever injustice or inequality drove the last residents out, right now it's a resource that's being squandered. Do we really have to wait for another ten or twenty years until the whole block is ready to be bulldozed into oblivion?
