Andre's Street Photography has added a photo to the pool:
My first exploration of this gorgeous building. Of course, this being a Saturday, there wasn't much activity in what's probably a beehive during the week. Nevertheless, the elevator dude - since he's a little old to be called a boy - was zipping up and down in that gorgeous, but oh so rickety elevator.
As we bounced up and down like a yo-yo, I asked him if they'd ever replaced the cables over the past 130 years or so? "No, he said, they just added some duct tape and super glue where necessary..."
Hmmm, a smart-ass like that needs to be immortalized, so we set up an ambush for him on the 7th floor. The whole building is very dimly lit and I needed sufficient depth of field to bring out the interior details of the elevator. Since the EOS 5Ds is basically a daylight-only camera, I set the ISO at 400, which resulted in a very slow shutter speed of half a second.
It would have been a magnificent shot if he'd stood perfectly still, but that was obviously not a realistic expectation....
Shots like these are not the ones that keep you awake at night. As long as those cabled hold and the elevator dude doesn't suffer some other catastrophic event, I can go back and take this shot over again, armed with equipment that's better suited to the task, and a new plan.
