Ten South LaSalle

artistmac has added a photo to the pool:

Ten South LaSalle

The developers wanted to tear down the whole building and put up a glass-and-steel tower in its place. Preservationists who rightly wanted to preserve LaSalle Streets great grey "canyon" would have none of it.

A "compromise" was reached. Everything was torn down except for the first four Beaux-Arts floors, and an exceedingly ugly 40-story blue-green-clad postmodern high-rise was built above it.

One need only look at 190 S. LaSalle to see what can be done when developers of a site are sensitive to the architectural styles of surrounding buildings.

When David Lowe's "Lost Chicago" is updated, this should be one of the shameful stories of destruction he details.
