Just hours after the lone gunman's attack in Dallas on police and on bystanders during an otherwise peaceful public demonstration, police in Chicago made a public show of force in key areas around the city, patrolling in conspicuous numbers.
This capped a week in which police officers in St. Paul, Minnesota and Baton Rouge, Louisiana killed black civilians they had detained sparking protests around the country.
